Wrongful Death Lawsuit Filed After Student’s Fatal Beating Near Las Vegas High School

The mother of Jonathan Lewis has initiated legal action following her son’s death from injuries sustained in a violent assault near Rancho High School in November 2023. Mellisa Ready’s wrongful death lawsuit, filed April 9, names multiple defendants including the school district, adjacent property owner, and other potentially liable parties.

The litigation contends school administrators were aware of previous aggressive behavior from students involved in the fatal incident and failed to fulfill their legal duty to adequately supervise students and prevent foreseeable harm. The complaint specifically argues that the district neglected to implement appropriate security measures despite knowledge of ongoing safety risks.

The lawsuit additionally names Sandra Corona, owner of property adjacent to the school grounds, alleging the deadly assault occurred partially on her premises. Ready’s legal claim asserts this location was a known student gathering spot with a documented history of physical altercations, and that Corona negligently failed to secure her property against reasonably foreseeable dangerous activities.

Ready seeks compensatory damages for wrongful death and negligence, including recovery for emotional distress, funeral and burial expenses, legal fees, and additional relief as determined by the court. This case highlights questions of institutional liability, premises security obligations, and foreseeability in school-adjacent violence.
