Jury Awards $2.4 Million in Wrongful Termination Case to Former Morgue Employee Who Reported Workplace Concerns

A former county morgue attendant has prevailed in a significant wrongful termination lawsuit, with jurors awarding Daniel Ridge, 49, $2.4 million against Alameda Health System. The verdict comes eight years after his 2015 dismissal from Highland Hospital, though Ridge was absent from the courtroom due to deteriorating mental health that reportedly led to homelessness and family estrangement.

According to court documents, Ridge, who suffered from undiagnosed post-traumatic stress disorder stemming from previous trauma, was terminated shortly after requesting medical leave. The litigation alleged his dismissal followed his documented concerns about workplace safety violations, excessive workload, inadequate benefits, and improper decedent handling protocols.

Ridge’s attorney noted their client’s current whereabouts remain unknown among Oakland’s homeless population, expressing concern about his welfare. Meanwhile, Alameda Health System issued a statement disagreeing with the verdict, maintaining they acted appropriately and suggesting a potential appeal. Legal representatives for Ridge highlighted that the health system reportedly invested approximately $3 million in defense costs despite a previous $500,000 settlement offer.
